Oct 28 – What is Social Emotional Learning and what does it look like in SD41
presented by Peter Dubinsky
This session will explore what SEL actually is, the 5 pillars of SEL, and some research on the effectiveness of SEL in schools. We will also examine what it looks like in Burnaby and what schools are doing to in regards to SEL implementation in the classroom and SEL data collection to ensure that what we are doing is making a difference.

Jan 6 – Transition to Secondary
presented by Elizabeth Gardner
This transition evening is to support the group that want to begin early to plan for their child’s transition, as well as those who are transition in the coming year to get a good picture of what is offered at the high schools. (For parents of children who may require more support with transition such as students with significant challenges, as well as mild challenges, learning disabilities, anxiety, etc. )
Jan 27 – Social Emotional Learning and School Connectedness
presented by Bev Ogilvie
This session addresses how one school in Burnaby focused on building connectedness through purposeful and intentional involvement of parents, staff, children and community members. A short 12 min video will be shown which highlights their journey.
Feb 24 – Taking Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Home
presented by Suzanne Vardy
What do you already do, and what can you add, to develop and encourage social emotional skills with your children at home? This session will help make explicit what you are already doing at home to support and refine your child(ren)’s SEL skills. We will also discuss other ways to build on what you already do. Parental resources, such as websites and blogs, will also be shared.
